074218262WHEREAS, on facilities where congestion is particularly heavy, the Virginia Department of Transportation allows vehicles to be driven on the shoulders of certain highways during peak use hours; and
WHEREAS, one location where such use is permitted is Interstate Route 66 between Interstate Route 495 and U.S. Route 50; and
WHEREAS, the Department presently permits vehicular travel on the shoulder lanes eastbound between 5:30 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. and westbound between 3:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. Monday through Friday; and
WHEREAS, commuting times could be further reduced and traffic congestion further eased on this facility by extending the hours during which travel on these shoulder lanes is permitted; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the Virginia Department of Transportation be hereby requested to extend the hours during which shoulder lanes may be used by traffic on Interstate Route 66 by permitting use of these shoulder lanes eastbound between 5:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. and westbound between 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. Monday through Friday; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates transmit a copy of this resolution to the Commonwealth Transportation Commissioner and the Virginia Department of Transportation so that they may be apprised of the sense of the General Assembly of Virginia in this matter.
