2007 SESSION
WHEREAS, in March 2002, President Bush officially proclaimed the National Bone and Joint Decade 2002-2011, a global, multi-disciplinary initiative targeting the care of people with musculoskeletal conditions and bone and joint disorders; and
WHEREAS, patients and the health care professionals who care for them, including orthopaedic surgeons, rheumatologists, physiatrists, physical therapists, chiropractors, osteopaths, athletic trainers, nurses, occupational therapists, and medical and patient health associations, are joining together to advance the understanding and treatment of musculoskeletal conditions through prevention, education, and research; and
WHEREAS, musculoskeletal disorders adversely affect the occupational and social lives of millions of people throughout the nation, costing billions of dollars in treatments and lost productivity; and
WHEREAS, the more the public learns about prevention activities the better able they are to prevent musculoskeletal conditions and bone and joint disorders; and
WHEREAS, the more patients with a musculoskeletal disorder learn about treatment options the better able they are to work with their healthcare professionals in determining the best course of action; and
WHEREAS, during National Action Week of the United States Bone and Joint Decade, the citizens of the Commonwealth are encouraged to join patients, medical professionals, healthcare organizations, government agencies, and industry to organize and participate in activities to educate patients and promote public awareness regarding musculoskeletal conditions and prevention activities; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly designate October 12-20, in 2007 and in each succeeding year through 2011, as the National Action Week of the United States Bone and Joint Decade in Virginia; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates post the designation of this week on the General Assembly's website.
