WHEREAS, Lance Corporal Jourdan L. Grez of Grottoes was killed in action in Iraq on May 11, 2005; and

WHEREAS, born in Long Branch, New Jersey, Jourdan Grez and his family moved to Richmond when he was in elementary school; and

WHEREAS, after a car accident tragically took the life of a close friend in high school, Jourdan Grez became a licensed emergency medical technician in order to help save the lives of others; and

WHEREAS, Jourdan Grez attended James Madison University from 1999 to 2004, majoring in finance with a minor in international business, but he was called to active duty before completing his degree; and

WHEREAS, Lance Corporal Grez was assigned to the United States Marine Corps Reserve's 4th Combat Engineer Battalion, 4th Marine Division in Roanoke; and

WHEREAS, Lance Corporal Grez's unit was deployed to Iraq in March 2005, attached to Regimental Combat Team 2, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, from Camp Lejeune, and participated in the Marine-led campaign, Operation Matador; and

WHEREAS, at age 24, Lance Corporal Grez was one of four Marines who died when their amphibious assault vehicle struck an explosive device while conducting combat operations against enemy forces in Karabilah, Iraq; and

WHEREAS, Lance Corporal Grez was scheduled to return home to the United States in October 2005; and

WHEREAS, Lance Corporal Grez will be remembered as a caring, dynamic, purpose-driven man, who loved sports and was a gifted artist; and

WHEREAS, Lance Corporal Grez was extremely devoted to his family, especially his parents, two brothers, and girlfriend and was immensely proud to be a loving and giving father to 23-month-old Colin; and

WHEREAS, Lance Corporal Grez's death is a reminder of the perils faced daily by the thousands of Americans who serve in our armed forces overseas and whose devotion to duty places them in harm's way; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a courageous and patriotic Virginian, Lance Corporal Jourdan L. Grez; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Lance Corporal Jourdan L. Grez as an expression of the high regard in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly and the citizens of Virginia.
