Celebrating the life of Colonel Thomas Holt Felts, Sr.

WHEREAS, United States Army Colonel Thomas Holt Felts, Sr., an exemplary 27-year military veteran, died in the line of duty in Iraq on November 14, 2006; and

WHEREAS, Colonel Felts, aged 45, was an exceptional officer, a devoted Christian, and loving husband and father of four children; he was the 100th brave Virginian, and the state’s highest ranking service member to lose his life in service to his country in Operation Iraqi Freedom or Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan; and

WHEREAS, Thomas Felts graduated from Varina High School in 1979 and earned a bachelor's degree in biology and chemistry from the University of Richmond in 1983; and

WHEREAS, Colonel Felts was attending the School for Advanced Military Studies at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, when he volunteered for duty in Iraq; and

WHEREAS, Colonel Felts was a proud member of the 2nd Brigade, 1st Infantry assigned to the 16th Military Transition Team that was training Iraqi soldiers to protect and defend their own country; and

WHEREAS, Colonel Felts had been stationed in Iraq since January 2006 and died when his vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device while conducting operations in Baghdad; and

WHEREAS, Thomas Felts will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife, Kimberly Waldrop Felts, and their four children, Sara Beth, LeAnna Rachel, Rebekah Vivian, and Thomas "TJ" Holt, Jr.; his mother, Mrs. Wallace Felts of Sandston, and his sister, Ramona "Missy" Felts Wonders of Haymarket; and numerous other loving family members and friends; and

WHEREAS, the tremendous loss of Colonel Felts is a reminder of the grave danger our brave men and women of the armed forces face in loyal service to their country; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby mourn the death of a courageous soldier and patriotic Virginian, Colonel Thomas Holt Felts, Sr.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Colonel Thomas Holt Felts, Sr., as an expression of the high regard in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly and the citizens of the Commonwealth.
