2006 SPECIAL SESSION I
060342740WHEREAS, Barboursville Vineyards celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2006, offering award-winning Virginia wines and serving fabulous food to the many appreciative residents of and visitors to beautiful Orange County; and
WHEREAS, in 1976, while visiting Virginia's Piedmont, Barboursville Vineyard's founder Gianni Zonin and his wife Silvana were reminded of their former home in the Piemonte of Italy, where the Zonin family had produced great wines for six generations; and
WHEREAS, in the spirit of Thomas Jefferson and his friend and associate Filippo Mazzei, Gianni Zonin began experimenting with varietals, successfully growing a few great grapes, such as Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Viognier, Moscato, Barbera, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Nebbiolo, that were well-suited for winemaking in the Piedmont region; and
WHEREAS, like Jefferson, Gianni Zonin was blessed with an association with another great lover of wine, Luca Pachina, who has masterfully overseen the Barboursville Vineyards and the production of its fine wines since 1991; and
WHEREAS, in 1999, Palladia Restaurant was opened for the further enjoyment of patrons of Barboursville Vineyard, showcasing its wonderful wines by complementing them with the fabulous food of Chef Melissa Close; and
WHEREAS, consistent national and international award-winners over the years, Barboursville Vineyard's magnificent wines have become a prized Virginia commodity; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend Barboursville Vineyards on the occasion of its 30th anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Gianni Zonin and the Barboursville Vineyard family as an expression of the General Assembly’s gratitude for their dedication to the art of winemaking and their contributions to Orange County and the Commonwealth.
