2006 SPECIAL SESSION I
WHEREAS, Seong’s Martial Arts Academy, with a total enrollment of approximately 7,000 students since 1987, celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2007; and
WHEREAS, Seong’s Martial Arts Academy participated for the first time in the Spotsylvania County Annual Holiday Parade in 1989 and won first place in 1992, 1994, and 2004; and
WHEREAS, Seong’s Martial Arts Academy hosted the world-renowned Korean Tigers Demonstration Team to perform a spectacular Tae Kwon Do demonstration at Courtland High School of Spotsylvania, as well as its first annual Virginia State Invitational Tournament in 1990; and
WHEREAS, in that same year, Joon K. Seong, founder of Seong’s Martial Arts Academy, established the Pan-Am Martial Arts Federation; and
WHEREAS, Seong’s Martial Arts Academy began participating in the Adopt-A-Highway program in 1994 and received the Outstanding Participant Award from the Virginia Department of Transportation’s 1995 Adopt-A-Highway program; and
WHEREAS, in 1995, Seong’s Martial Arts Academy hosted its major Virginia State Invitational Tournament at Courtland High School, which became the most successful event in Seong’s Academy history with an attendance of 350 participants from 17 different martial arts schools and approximately 1,000 spectators; and
WHEREAS, Joon K. Seong received the Best Master of 1995 Award from the Grand Masters Association of America; and
WHEREAS, in 1997, Seong’s Martial Arts Academy celebrated its grand re-opening after extensive renovation at the Breezewood Shopping Center in Fredericksburg; and
WHEREAS, the 1996-1997 Miss Virginia, Michelle Kang, attended Seong’s Martial Arts Academy 7th Annual Virginia State Invitational Tournament as a special guest; and
WHEREAS, Joon K. Seong received a citation from the South Korean government in 1997 in recognition of his dedicated service and outstanding contribution to the development of Tae Kwon Do; and
WHEREAS, Seong’s Martial Arts Academy has supported its community with many years of top-notch instruction in martial arts at the Culpeper Tennis Center, Round Oak Baptist Church, Fawn Lake, Berkeley Elementary School, Harrison Road Elementary School, Lake of the Woods, and Minnieland; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate Seong’s Martial Arts Academy on its many outstanding achievements during 20 years of teaching martial arts; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the founder of Seong’s Martial Arts Academy, Joon K. Seong, and all of the talented members of the Academy as an expression of the General Assembly’s appreciation for their dedication to a high standard of martial arts education and for their numerous contributions to the Fredericksburg community.
