Celebrating the life of Freeland Everett.

WHEREAS, Freeland Everett of Norfolk, a respected citizen and career United States Navy serviceman, died on August 17, 2006; and

WHEREAS, born in Mississippi, Freeland Everett attended Navy Salvage School in Bayonne, New Jersey, and served his country in the United States Navy as a Boatswain's Mate/Mark V Salvage Diver; and

WHEREAS, an American patriot and a skilled Navy diver, Freeland Everett served on mine sweepers as a member of a Salvage Dive Unit and is an honored veteran of World War II, the Korean War, and Vietnam; and

WHEREAS, Freeland Everett valiantly served on the USS Utina ATF-1 63, the USS Opportune ARS-41, the USS Hoist ARS-40, the Atakapa ATF-149, as well as the battleships USS Iowa and USS Pennsylvania; and

WHEREAS, during his 22 years of exemplary service with the United States Navy, Freeland Everett was honored with the National Defense Modal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, Navy Occupation Service Medal with Asia and Europe Clasps, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, and World War II Victory Medal; and

WHEREAS, after retiring from the military and Exxon Shipping, Freeland Everett remained very active in the community as a member of the British Car Club, Khedive Auto Club, the Tidewater Triumph Register, the Eagle Haven Men’s Golf Association, the Khedive Golf Club, the Khedive Shrine Temple, and the Norview Masonic Lodge No. 113; and

WHEREAS, a great supporter of his fellow veterans, Freeland Everett was a former president of the United States Navy Salvage Divers Reunited, as well as a member of the Fleet Reserve Association, the UDT-Seal Association, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4609; and

WHEREAS, Freeland Everett will be fondly remembered for his love of cars and his amiable and compassionate nature and sorely missed by his wife, Mary Everett, and his loving children, five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of an American patriot and outstanding Virginian, Freeland Everett; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Freeland Everett as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
