Celebrating the life of Clyde McDaniel.

WHEREAS, Clyde McDaniel, respected citizen and beloved professor emeritus of mathematics at Norfolk State University, died on September 3, 2006; and

WHEREAS, a Richmond native, Clyde McDaniel was the son of the late David and Armenia McDaniel and the widower of Josephine McDaniel; and

WHEREAS, Clyde McDaniel served his country in the United States Army as a company commander, battalion adjutant, and assistant personnel adjutant of the Headquarters of the Motor Transport Brigade, known as the Red Ball Express; and

WHEREAS, for his valiant service during World War II, Clyde McDaniel received five Bronze Service Stars for participating in the Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes, and Central European campaigns, the World War II Army Occupation Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the American Campaign Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, and the Thank You America Certificate from the French government; and

WHEREAS, Clyde McDaniel earned a bachelor's degree from Virginia Union University, a master's degree from the University of Michigan, and continued graduate study at the University of Michigan, Oklahoma State University, the University of Arizona, and the University of Wisconsin; and

WHEREAS, a fine administrator and educator with endless enthusiasm and energy, Clyde McDaniel was the first full-time mathematics teacher at Norfolk State University, where he began teaching in 1940, served as head of the Mathematics Department until 1970, and retired with a distinguished record of service in 1981; and

WHEREAS, Clyde McDaniel supported Norfolk State University in countless leadership roles, as acting chairman of the Department of Natural Sciences, director of the Summer School, director of the National Science Foundation Summer Programs, and co-director of the Evening College; and

WHEREAS, the Clyde McDaniel Endowed Mathematics Scholarship Fund at Norfolk State University was established in Clyde McDaniel's honor for his numerous invaluable contributions to the university; and

WHEREAS, Clyde McDaniel gave his time and immense talents to numerous professional organizations, including the American Association of University Professors, National Education Association, Association for Higher Education, National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and Mathematical Association of America; and

WHEREAS, Clyde McDaniel was an active member of Grace Episcopal Church for over 60 years and a lifelong member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars; and

WHEREAS, always concerned about the welfare of his neighbors, Clyde McDaniel served as the president of the Men’s Club and the Brotherhood of Saint Andrew, a member of the boards of the Mission and Ministry Foundation of the Diocese of Southern Virginia, and a member of the Boy Scout Troop Committee; and

WHEREAS, Clyde McDaniel will be fondly remembered by his two sons, his daughter, their wonderful families, and other loving family members; his countless former students, friends, and admirers; and the Norfolk State University family; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of a fine educator and outstanding Virginian, Clyde McDaniel; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Clyde McDaniel as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
