Celebrating the life of Mary Magdalene Powell.

WHEREAS, Mary Magdalene Powell of Roanoke, a respected citizen and community supporter, died on September 1, 2006; and

WHEREAS, evangelist Mary Magdalene Powell was the beloved former state supervisor of the Women's Department, Second Jurisdiction, Church of God in Christ; and

WHEREAS, Mary Magdalene Powell was born in Roanoke on January 12, 1926, the only daughter in the family of four children; and

WHEREAS, Mary Magdalene Powell married her childhood sweetheart, David A. Powell, Sr., when they were in their teens, and they enjoyed a happy marriage for 64 years and were devoted to their loving daughter, three sons, and their families, including eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; and

WHEREAS, Mary Magdalene Powell graduated as an honor student from Lucy Addison High School, attended Roanoke Business College, and earned a certificate from the Thousand Oaks Bible Institute in Thousand Oaks, California; and

WHEREAS, Mary Magdalene Powell and her husband provided foster care for 12 children, as well as aided, in their home, hundreds of missionaries, ministers, and other people in need for over 35 years; and

WHEREAS, a devout woman with a generous and loving nature, Mary Magdalene Powell was a loyal member of Faith Temple Church of God in Christ in Rocky Mount, where she and her husband fostered an outstanding ministry; and

WHEREAS, a licensed missionary, Mary Magdalene Powell served her fellow citizens and her church in countless ways, including as the president of the Young Women’s Christian Council, a teacher of the Prayer and Bible Band, and the president of the Missionary Home Circle; and

WHEREAS, a notary public and an active community volunteer, Mary Magdalene Powell always was available to help her neighbors and was honored as a volunteer for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and the March of Dimes; and

WHEREAS, Mary Magdalene Powell will be fondly remembered and will be greatly missed by her family, her numerous friends and admirers, and the congregation of Faith Temple Church of God in Christ; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of a fine Virginian, Mary Magdalene Powell; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Mary Magdalene Powell as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
