2006 SPECIAL SESSION I
WHEREAS, Lambuth Clarke of Norfolk, the greatly admired second president of Virginia Wesleyan College, died on September 20, 2006; and
WHEREAS, often referred to as "Mr. Virginia Wesleyan," Lambuth Clarke was president on the day that Virginia Wesleyan College held its first classes in 1966, led the college with integrity and vision for 26 years, and retired in 1992; and
WHEREAS, prior to joining Virginia Wesleyan College, Lambuth Clarke served as the vice president of development for Randolph-Macon College in Ashland; and
WHEREAS, Lambuth Clarke was a gifted administrator and communicator, and the faculty and staff of Virginia Wesleyan College were immensely loyal to him and his goals for the fledgling Methodist-affiliated school; and
WHEREAS, during Lambuth Clarke's tenure, Virginia Wesleyan College grew and flourished from a student body of 75 to an enrollment of 1,440 and from an annual budget of $250,000 to $14.6 million; and
WHEREAS, one of Lambuth Clarke's greatest legacies will be his emphasis on the importance of excellence in education as the college fought to attract students in its early years; and
WHEREAS, the newest academic building on Virginia Wesleyan College's Virginia Beach campus is named in honor of Lambuth Clarke as a tribute to his numerous invaluable contributions to the college; and
WHEREAS, after his retirement, Lambuth Clarke was extremely active in community programs and activities and never ceased being a teacher; he enjoyed helping young people and seniors in need, served as a tutor, and volunteered at Ghent Elementary School, working with students on the Latin and Greek roots of words; and
WHEREAS, concerned with the welfare of his fellow citizens, Lambuth Clarke was a faithful member of Larchmont United Methodist Church and an active participant in the church's many missions; and
WHEREAS, Lambuth Clarke will be fondly remembered for his fine leadership and his great love for Virginia Wesleyan College and the Hampton Roads community and will be greatly missed by Alice, his wife of 51 years, his four children, and six grandchildren; his numerous friends and colleagues; and the citizens of the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of an outstanding Virginian, Lambuth Clarke; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Lambuth Clarke as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
