Celebrating the life of Claudia Boyden Caldwell.

WHEREAS, Claudia Boyden Caldwell of Martinsville, respected citizen and longtime educator in the Martinsville City Public Schools, died on April 20, 2006; and

WHEREAS, born and raised in Salisbury, North Carolina, Claudia Caldwell attended Livingstone College in Salisbury, North Carolina, and earned a master's degree from North Carolina A&T State University; and

WHEREAS, Claudia Caldwell moved to Martinsville to begin her teaching career and taught at Albert Harris Elementary School for many years, before becoming the principal at West End Primary School; and

WHEREAS, respected for her visionary leadership and vast experience, Claudia Caldwell was a mentor to numerous new teachers and helped to integrate the faculty at Druid Hills Elementary School, where she taught until her retirement; and

WHEREAS, Claudia Caldwell was an active member of many professional and civic organizations, including the Martinsville Education Association, the Parent Teachers Association, the Arthritis Foundation, the Piedmont Arts Association, the Heart Fund, the American Cancer Society, the March of Dimes, the Leukemia Fund, and the Salvation Army; and

WHEREAS, committed to improving the quality of life of her neighbors, Claudia Caldwell gave her time and immense talents to the Martinsville-Henry County Mental Health Association, the Association for Retarded Citizens, Anchor House, and FOCUS; and

WHEREAS, Claudia Caldwell served as assistant secretary for Voter Registration and was a dedicated member of the Voters League, the Criminal Justice Committee of the West Piedmont Planning Commission, and the Democratic Women's Group; and

WHEREAS, a faithful member of Grace Presbyterian Church, Claudia Caldwell served in many leadership positions over the years and was an enthusiastic participant in the church's numerous missions and activities; and

WHEREAS, always concerned for the welfare of her fellow residents, Claudia Caldwell received countless accolades and awards for her inspirational volunteerism; and

WHEREAS, Claudia Caldwell will be fondly remembered for her generous and loving spirit and will be sorely missed by her family, her numerous friends and admirers, and the citizens of the City of Martinsville; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of an outstanding Virginian, Claudia Boyden Caldwell; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Claudia Boyden Caldwell as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
