Commending the Oakton High School girls' lacrosse team.

WHEREAS, Oakton High School captured the Virginia High School League Group AAA girls' lacrosse state championship by defeating Robinson High School on June 3, 2006; and

WHEREAS, to rise to the title game, the Oakton Cougars, who finished with a record of 18-3, scored 12 straight goals, with five goals apiece by Hillary Freund and Victoria Cable, to defeat Charlottesville High School, 26-8, in the semifinal game; and

WHEREAS, Oakton High School's 9-5 championship win over 10th-ranked Robinson High School at Westfield was a sweet victory for the highly motivated and talented Cougar team, which has had near misses at the coveted title for the past few years; and

WHEREAS, the competitive Oakton and Robinson girls' lacrosse teams have alternated wins in their last six meetings over the past two years, including this season's Concorde District and Northern Region finals; and

WHEREAS, junior Katie Berkel scored two of Oakton's final four goals in an exciting second half, with a score by junior Hillary Freund, and a final goal by sophomore Ashley Kimener in the last five seconds of the game; and

WHEREAS, the success of the girls' lacrosse team is a tribute to the teamwork and dedication of the players; the leadership of Head Coach Jean Counts and her staff; and the support of the students, faculty, and parents of Oakton High School; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend  Oakton High School girls' lacrosse team as the Group AAA state champion; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Coach Jean Counts and the members of the Oakton High School girls' lacrosse team as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations on its extraordinary season and championship performance.
