SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 5041 Commending the Goochland High School baseball team.   Agreed to by the Senate, June 19, 2006 Agreed to by the House of Delegates, June 20, 2006  

WHEREAS, on June 10, 2006, the Goochland High School baseball team won the Virginia High School League Group A state championship by defeating Grayson County High School, 4–3, in the state title game at Radford University; and

WHEREAS, in winning the state championship, the Goochland Bulldogs completed an outstanding 2006 season with a record of 27–1; and

WHEREAS, the Bulldogs finished the regular season undefeated in the James River District, then swept the district tournament championship; and

WHEREAS, the champions of Region B, the Bulldogs earned a slot in the state title game by defeating Strasburg High School, 6–0, in the state semifinals; and

WHEREAS, in the playoffs, the Goochland Bulldogs displayed the same qualities that carried them to victory in the regular season: outstanding starting pitching, aggressive base-running, and timely hitting; and

WHEREAS, proving once again the baseball adage that good pitching beats good hitting, Goochland's starting pitchers threw complete games in all of the team's 27 victories; and

WHEREAS, in winning their first state baseball championship since 1973, the Bulldogs won the final game for Head Coach Bryan Gordon, who will become a school administrator following two successful decades as Goochland's baseball coach; and

WHEREAS, by displaying leadership, teamwork, and sportsmanship throughout the regular season and postseason tournaments, the Bulldogs baseball team proudly represented Goochland High School and its supporters in the Goochland County community; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Goochland High School baseball team on its 2006 Virginia High School League Group A state baseball championship; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Head Coach Bryan Gordon in honor of the championship performance of the 2006 Goochland Bulldogs baseball team.
