SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 5030
Commending the Clarke County High School boys' basketball team.

WHEREAS, Clarke County High School (27-3) won the 2006 Virginia High School League Group A state boys' basketball championship on March 11, 2006; and

WHEREAS, before an enthusiastic crowd at the Siegel Center in Richmond, the Clarke County High School Eagles defeated the Twin Valley High School Panthers (26-3); and

WHEREAS, Clarke County High School convincingly won the game against Chesterfield Community High School 75-66 to advance to the state title game; and

WHEREAS, down by five points at the beginning of the fourth quarter, Clarke County High School relied on aggressive play by junior guard Christian Waters and a tenacious defense to keep its championship hopes alive; and

WHEREAS, in the last three minutes of the game, the Eagles scored seven straight points, forced three turnovers, and held Twin Valley to only two shots; and

WHEREAS, the Eagles' 51-49 championship win over the Panthers is the first state boys' basketball championship for Clarke County; and

WHEREAS, the Eagles' impressive sophomore guard, Chandler Rhoads, was the high scorer with a game-high 27 points, followed by seniors Jesse Racer with 11 points and Matt Hardesty with 7 points; and

WHEREAS, seniors Eric Lawrence, Lee Liggins, and Pete Smetanick and juniors Matt Jarvis, Josh Krick, Alex Roberts, Wes Schoeb, Anthony Smith, and Robert Williams also made valuable contributions in a tremendous team effort in the championship games and throughout the season; and

WHEREAS, Clarke County High School's triumph is a tribute to the leadership of Head Coach Brent Emmart and his dedicated staff; the talent and hard work of the players; and the support of the students, faculty, and fans of Clarke County High School; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate the Clarke County High School boys' basketball team on an exceptional 2005-2006 basketball season; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Head Coach Brent Emmart on behalf of the Eagles as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for their championship performance.
