SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 5014
Celebrating the life of Joe Broderick.

WHEREAS, Joe Broderick of Locust Grove, a respected citizen and community benefactor, died on March 30, 2006; and

WHEREAS, after his retirement, Joe Broderick moved from Northern Virginia to settle in Locust Grove and quickly became a stalwart supporter of the community; and

WHEREAS, with endless enthusiasm and energy, Joe Broderick became a part-owner in the retail hardware store, Lake of the Woods Home Center, and joined the Lake of the Woods Rescue Squad; and

WHEREAS, possessing uncommon goodwill and concern for others, Joe Broderick did more during his rescue squad duties than respond to calls--he became involved with his fellow citizens in need; and

WHEREAS, Joe Broderick was a generous benefactor to everyone he met and an extraordinary mentor, especially to young people; and

WHEREAS, Joe Broderick sponsored youth baseball and soccer teams and touched the lives and fostered the well-being of countless children; and

WHEREAS, on a crusade of responsibility and caring, Joe Broderick was instrumental in having a segment of road near his store on State Route 3, where many fatalities and numerous accidents occurred, straightened and improved by the Virginia Department of Transportation; and

WHEREAS, Joe Broderick cared deeply for people and encouraged young people to become involved with the Lake of the Woods Rescue Squad; he helped with EMT classes and was RM29, who meticulously maintained the squad's vehicles and equipment; and

WHEREAS, a beneficent member of the community, Joe Broderick will be sorely missed by his loving family, his numerous friends and admirers, the residents of Locust Grove, and the members of the Lake of the Woods Church; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of an outstanding community volunteer and fine Virginian, Joe Broderick; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Joe Broderick as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
