Commending Hyeon Kon Lee.

WHEREAS, Grandmaster Hyeon Kon Lee is an internationally known leader in the Korean martial art of Tae Kwon Do and the former undefeated Tae Kwon Do welterweight champion of all Asia; and

WHEREAS, Grandmaster Hyeon Kon "H. K." Lee holds a 9th degree black belt from the Korean Moo Duk Kwan Association and an 8th degree black belt from the World Tae Kwon Do Federation; and

WHEREAS, born in Korea, Grandmaster H. K. Lee later immigrated to America, where he has made Herndon his second home, receiving his United States citizenship in 1981; and

WHEREAS, Grandmaster H. K. Lee has dedicated himself to being a strong community-minded citizen of his adopted country, promoting the positive character-building and physical health benefits of Tae Kwon Do; and

WHEREAS, Grandmaster H. K. Lee has helped organizations raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for charity, and his own Tae Kwon Do academy has raised tens of thousands of dollars for worthy local organizations such as the Virginia Jaycees, the Herndon High School Booster Club, and the Vecinos Unidos Herndon/Neighbors United, Inc.; and

WHEREAS, Grandmaster H. K. Lee has appeared as the cover story in the January 1996 issue of Black Belt magazine and has been featured twice as the cover story of the Tae Kwon Do Times, in the 1992 yearbook and the April 1995 issue; and

WHEREAS, Grandmaster H. K. Lee has received numerous awards, including the 1984 Master Instructor of the Year by the American Tae Kwon Do Federation, election to the 1984 Hall of Fame by Traditional Tae Kwon Do magazine, the 1985 Man of the Year by the American Tae Kwon Do Federation, and the 1986 Man of the Year by World Tae Kwon Do magazine; and

WHEREAS, recognized as an outstanding leader in the growth and continued development of modern day Tae Kwon Do, Grandmaster H. K. Lee has served as president of the Virginia A.A.U. (formerly U.S.T.U.) Tae Kwon Do Association, as chairman of the United States Tae Kwon Do Union Education and Certification Committee, and is currently serving as vice-chairman of the World Tae Kwon Do Federation Education Committee; and

WHEREAS, Grandmaster H. K. Lee has compassion and love for each of his students and has touched the lives of thousands of Tae Kwon Do practitioners worldwide; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Grandmaster Hyeon Kon Lee be hereby commended on his remarkable career and outstanding leadership; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Grandmaster Hyeon Kon Lee as an expression of the House of Delegates’ appreciation for his many accomplishments and his service to the citizens of the Town of Herndon and the Commonwealth.
