Commending the Reverend Marvin F. Kerby, Jr.

WHEREAS, the Reverend Marvin F. Kerby, Jr., a respected citizen and avid community supporter, is recognized for his longtime ministry and service to the residents of the Town of West Point; and

WHEREAS, Marvin Kerby graduated from Rockfish Valley High School in Nelson County, received a bachelor's degree from the University of Richmond, and earned a master of divinity degree from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, North Carolina; and

WHEREAS, Marvin Kerby was ordained as a minister at Hebron Baptist Church on October 13, 1956; and

WHEREAS, Marvin Kerby has served as the beloved pastor of several congregations, including the Vesuvius Baptist Church in Nelson County, the First Baptist Church of West Point, and the Emmaus Baptist Church in New Kent County; and

WHEREAS, a dedicated spiritual leader, Marvin Kerby joined Glebe Landing Baptist Church in Middlesex County as interim pastor and then as pastor, where he has served with great sensitivity and enthusiasm from 2000 until the present; and

WHEREAS, Marvin Kerby has always been concerned with the welfare of his fellow citizens and has served on the West Point Town Council for 18 years; and

WHEREAS, in 1994 Marvin Kerby was one of the first elected members of the West Point School Board; and

WHEREAS, Marvin Kerby has given his time and immense talents to numerous civic organizations, including the Kiwanis Club of West Point, the Tri-Rivers Chamber of Commerce, the Cancer Support Group, the Mattaponi Literacy Council, the Puller Center, the Parent-Child Development Corporation, the Mental Health Association, the United Way Help Line, the Boy Scouts of America, and the West Point Ministers’ Association; and

WHEREAS, Marvin Kerby has extended his ministry beyond the bounds of his own denomination to serve as a pastor to his fellow citizens in the Town of West Point and the surrounding counties; and

WHEREAS, Marvin Kerby was honored by his friends, colleagues, and neighbors on August 20, 2006, at West Point Christian Church to celebrate his 50 years of outstanding service as an inspirational minister and a compassionate community supporter; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate the Reverend Marvin F. Kerby, Jr., on his numerous achievements and his 50 years of exemplary service to his church and his community; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Reverend Marvin F. Kerby, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s best wishes for continued success in his ministry.
