060363328WHEREAS, Dr. Ruth Nelson of Fredericksburg is recognized for her many achievements over the past six years as president of AARP Virginia; and
WHEREAS, Ruth Nelson has served as AARP state president since January 2001 with reappointments in January 2003 and January 2005; and
WHEREAS, AARP Virginia is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization of 950,000 members and 72 chapters across the Commonwealth that helps citizens 50 years old and older have "independence, choice, and control in ways that are beneficial and affordable to them and to society as a whole"; and
WHEREAS, Ruth Nelson earned a bachelor’s degree in secondary business education, a master's degree in guidance and counseling, and a doctoral degree in higher education administration from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan; and
WHEREAS, before moving to Fredericksburg, Ruth Nelson was a dedicated professional with stellar accomplishments serving the Detroit Public School System and the Rockefeller Foundation; and
WHEREAS, since becoming a member of the Fredericksburg chapter in 1993, Ruth Nelson has spearheaded numerous AARP community service projects, including helping inmates prepare for their GED examination, assisting the Rappahannock Regional Library with its adult literacy program, and providing educational guidance to young people during their transition from the welfare system to full employment; and
WHEREAS, Ruth Nelson has served in numerous important volunteer and leadership roles, such as AARP Associate State Coordinator for Community Operations, diversity trainer for the southeastern region, delegate to the 1998 AARP Biennial Convention, and chair of the AARP Virginia delegate selection committee for the 2000 national convention; and
WHEREAS, a knowledgeable and experienced leader, Ruth Nelson is dedicated to eliminating financial fraud aimed at the elderly, making long-term care available and affordable, and providing transportation services for seniors and disabled persons in need; and
WHEREAS, during her tenure as AARP Virginia president, Ruth Nelson has been a great supporter of AARP programs that assist seniors in retirement planning and those that enable them to better understand their health care options and rights; and
WHEREAS, Ruth Nelson has been invaluable in the expansion of services for seniors, many of whom are still working, while maintaining a strong base of programs for retired members; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate Dr. Ruth Nelson on her many achievements as president of AARP Virginia; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Dr. Ruth Nelson as an expression of the General Assembly’s gratitude for her commitment to the citizens of the Commonwealth.
