Celebrating the life of Kenneth Jennings Dobson.

WHEREAS, Kenneth Jennings Dobson of Dublin, revered citizen and longtime superintendent of the Pulaski County Public Schools, died on September 16, 2006; and

WHEREAS, Kenneth Dobson was born in Richmond on March 23, 1926, grew up in Chester, and left home to serve his country in the United States Navy at the age of 17; and

WHEREAS, after three years of military duty, Kenneth Dobson returned to Virginia to live with his uncle in Montgomery County, graduated from Christiansburg High School, and earned a bachelor's degree from Emory & Henry College and a master's degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University; and

WHEREAS, Kenneth Dobson served Virginia's public schools for 39 years, starting as a teacher in Montgomery and Floyd Counties and then devoting most of his career to the Pulaski County Public Schools as a social studies teacher, football coach, assistant principal, and county director of instruction; and

WHEREAS, an exceptional administrator and visionary leader, Kenneth Dobson became superintendent of the Pulaski County Public Schools in 1965, a position he held with great distinction for 24 years until his retirement in 1989; and

WHEREAS, over the years, Kenneth Dobson gave his time and immense talent to numerous professional and civic organizations, serving as president of the Virginia Association of School Superintendents and as a member of the Virginia Association of School Administrators, the Appalachian Education Laboratory, the Henry Clay Masonic Lodge of Dublin, and the Dublin Lions Club; and

WHEREAS, Kenneth Dobson continued to coach as a senior assistant in charge of the place kickers for the Pulaski County High School Cougars and as one of the football team's biggest fans, the school's stadium was named in his honor; and

WHEREAS, Kenneth Dobson will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife of 54 years, Sue, and his wonderful family; his students and players; his countless friends and admirers; and the citizens of Pulaski County; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of a fine Virginian, Kenneth Jennings Dobson; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Kenneth Jennings Dobson as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
