Celebrating the life of Colonel Earl M. Cunard, Jr.

WHEREAS, Colonel Earl M. Cunard, Jr., an admired community advocate and respected citizen of Westridge, died on September 4, 2006; and

WHEREAS, Earl M. Cunard, Jr., was born in New Jersey on August 7, 1923, attended Rider College, was selected to participate in the V-12 officer program at Princeton University, and joined the United States Marines Corps in 1943; and

WHEREAS, Colonel Cunard served his country in World War II, the Korean War, and in Vietnam; he received the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, and Meritorious Service medals for his valiant service; and he assisted in the planning of the Marine Corps' Vietnam exit strategy; and

WHEREAS, after retiring from a distinguished military career, Colonel Cunard devoted much of his time aiding his community by serving on local planning organizations and tirelessly working to improve the quality of life of his fellow citizens in Prince William County; and

WHEREAS, Colonel Cunard was a great supporter of local planning and development that enhanced the natural landscape, protected historic resources, and preserved green spaces for all county residents to enjoy; and

WHEREAS, Colonel Cunard was a member of and an active volunteer for numerous local civic organizations, including the Westridge Board of Trustees and the planning committee for the McCoart County Center area, and served as a member and longtime president of the Lake Ridge-Occoquan-Coles Civic Association, one of Virginia’s most effective citizen advocacy groups; and

WHEREAS, the Earl M. Cunard Park at Ridgefield Village was named as a tribute to Colonel Cunard's many contributions to his community, and he was selected as an honored Westridge Volunteer of the Year; and

WHEREAS, Colonel Cunard will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his family, his numerous friends and admirers, and the citizens of Prince William County; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of a respected community benefactor and outstanding Virginian, Colonel Earl M. Cunard, Jr.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Colonel Earl M. Cunard, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
