HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 5149
Commending Henry M. Fulcher.

WHEREAS, Henry M. Fulcher, the heart and soul of radio station WFLO FM/AM, is recognized for his 50 years of outstanding service to the citizens of the Farmville community; and

WHEREAS, co-owner and junior partner of Colonial Broadcasting Company, Inc., Henry Fulcher also serves as vice president and treasurer of the company, which owns and operates WFLO, where he presents six hours of country, bluegrass, and gospel music every day; and

WHEREAS, Henry Fulcher recalls that John Wilson, owner and senior partner, hired him to begin work for the radio station on October 23, 1956, and the WFLO family will hold a 50th anniversary gala on the morning of October 14th at the Farmville Train Station to celebrate the beginning of that long and special collaboration; and

WHEREAS, early in his career, Henry Fulcher was a rising star, who was listed in Outstanding Young Men of America and the Original Who's Who of Country Music; he appeared on the popular television show Hee Haw and was featured on Dr. Norman Vincent Peale's American Character, in the music magazine Bluegrass Unlimited, and as the Clark Family show emcee; and

WHEREAS, a great supporter of Virginia's rich music culture, Henry Fulcher was instrumental in establishing the national historic marker in Appomattox honoring Joe Sweeney as the inventor of the five-string banjo, the historical monument for Roy Clark at his birthplace in Meherrin, as well as the entertainer’s appointment as artist-in-residence at Longwood College in 1979; and

WHEREAS, Henry Fulcher served on the board of Prince Edward School Foundation for 25 years, has held all of the top leadership positions of the Virginia Folk Music Association, has guest lectured on communications at what is now Longwood University, and has emceed the State Championships of Country and Bluegrass Music for 50 years; and

WHEREAS, during his distinguished career, Henry Fulcher has always given back to the community and has received countless awards for his hard work and dedication, including Virginia’s Friend of Country Music by Virginia Folk Music, Inc., Broadcaster of the Year by a state poll of country music fans, Distinguished Service by the Farmville Jaycees, the White Hat by the Virginia Bluegrass and Country Music Foundation, Outstanding Citizen by the Prince Edward Ruritan Club, and Outstanding Citizen and Good Samaritan by the Modern Woodmen of America; and

WHEREAS, an unforgettable charity and benefit emcee, Henry Fulcher has written numerous shows and other artistic works and has been honored by many area civic organizations, including the Appomattox Jaycees, Southside Hospital, Piedmont Pork Producers, Old Dominion Eye Bank, Clarksville Lions Club, Buckingham and Prince Edward 4-H Clubs, Darlington Heights Community Center, Chase City Jaycees, Crewe Kiwanis Club, Waynesboro Ruritan Club, Blackstone Chamber of Commerce, March of Dimes, Coast Guard Auxiliary, Cancer Relay for Life, and the local fire departments in nearly every town in the county; he has twice been chosen as grand marshal for the Loyalty Day Parade hosted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars and for Prince Edward’s 250th Anniversary along with John Wilson; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate Henry M. Fulcher on his 50 years of outstanding service to the music lovers of Farmville and Prince Edward County; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Henry M. Fulcher as an expression of the General Assembly’s gratitude for his commitment to the citizens of the Commonwealth.
