HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 5132
Commending Dr. Edwin James Harvie, Jr.

WHEREAS, Dr. Edwin James Harvie, Jr., revered Danville physician, retires from private practice on September 5, 2006; and

WHEREAS, Edwin Harvie received his medical degree from the University of Virginia in 1958 and established a thriving internal medicine practice in the pre-Medicare era; and

WHEREAS, a skilled and dedicated physician for more than 42 years, Dr. Harvie has enjoyed a rewarding partnership with his friend and colleague, Dr. Clifford Caddy, at Internal Medicine Associates on Holbrook Street in Danville; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Harvie is highly respected by his colleagues and professional staff in the medical community as a competent and thorough physician and is admired as a loyal and considerate friend; and

WHEREAS, throughout his distinguished career, Dr. Harvie has witnessed and kept up with the extraordinary changes in the practice of medicine and the diagnosis of disease, including amazing advances in imaging and other diagnostic study technologies, tremendous breakthroughs in internal medicine in the treatment of cardiovascular disease and cardiac surgery, and the discovery of a vast array of life-saving medical procedures; and

WHEREAS, as the conscientious chair of the Virginia Medical Society's delegation to the American Medical Association, Dr. Harvie has worked diligently to educate federal lawmakers on ways to bring meaningful reform to the current malpractice system; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Harvie has served as the president of the medical staff and a board member of the Danville Regional Medical Center, a delegate and chairman of the Medical Society of Virginia’s delegation to the American Medical Association, and a board member of the University of Virginia Medical Alumni Association, as well as a trustee of the medical school's foundation; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Harvie is most proud of his honor as the 1995 Virginia Laureate Award recipient by the Virginia Chapter of the American College of Physicians; and

WHEREAS, always concerned with the welfare of his neighbors, Dr. Harvie has given his time and immense talent as president of the Rotary Club of Danville and the Danville Concert Association; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Harvie is foremost an understanding and compassionate family doctor, who values the countless relationships he has established with his patients and their families over the years; and

WHEREAS, after retiring, Dr. Harvie will continue to serve his community as the medical director of the Free Clinic in Danville and he and his wife Betty will enjoy spending time traveling and visiting their daughter and son and their four wonderful grandchildren; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate Dr. Edwin James Harvie, Jr., on his many remarkable achievements and exemplary career as a physician; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Dr. Edwin James Harvie, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s best wishes for a happy and rewarding retirement.
