HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 5128
Celebrating the life of the Honorable T. Ryland Dodson.

WHEREAS, the Honorable T. Ryland Dodson of Danville, respected citizen, honored judge, and community benefactor, died on August 5, 2006; and

WHEREAS, Ryland Dodson was born on March 31, 1922, in Ringgold, the son of the late Alvin Bernice Dodson and Irene Clements Dodson; and

WHEREAS, Ryland Dodson attended public school in Pittsylvania County, served his country in the 30th Infantry Division of the United States Army during World War II, and received a bachelor's and law degree from Washington and Lee University in Lexington; and

WHEREAS, in 1947 Ryland Dodson began his law practice in the City of Danville and was appointed an associate judge of the Municipal Court of Danville in 1958; and

WHEREAS, elected to the General District Court for the 22nd Judicial District in 1978, Judge Dodson served with great honor and distinction until his retirement on February 3, 1998; and

WHEREAS, Judge Dodson, well-known for his fairness, superb judicial temperament, and extreme patience, continued as a substitute judge serving the Commonwealth until the fall of 2005; and

WHEREAS, Judge Dodson was a longtime member of Ringgold Baptist Church and was most recently a devoted member of First Presbyterian Church, where he taught Sunday school, served as an elder, and was involved in the church's many missions; and

WHEREAS, always concerned with the welfare of his neighbors, Judge Dodson was active in community affairs and was a member of numerous civic organizations, including the Danville Lions Club; and

WHEREAS, Judge Dodson will be fondly remembered as a valued friend and devoted husband and father and will be missed by his beloved wife; his three wonderful daughters, stepson, and numerous family members; his six cherished grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and his countless friends and admirers; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of an exemplary public servant and an outstanding Virginian, the Honorable T. Ryland Dodson; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of the Honorable T. Ryland Dodson as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
