HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 5125
Celebrating the life of Colonel Edward Bickford Young, Jr.

WHEREAS, Colonel Edward Bickford Young, Jr., beloved teacher and revered Superintendent Emeritus of Fishburne Military School in Waynesboro, died on July 3, 2006; and

WHEREAS, an American patriot, Edward Young graduated from Riverside Military Academy and the Virginia Military Institute, served in the United States Army as a member of the 91st Infantry Division assigned to duty in Italy during World War II, and continued service to his country in the Army Reserves until 1956; and

WHEREAS, Edward Young came to Fishburne Military School in the fall of 1946, rose quickly to the rank of major, and was named commandant of cadets and head of the English department in 1950; and

WHEREAS, Edward Young was promoted to executive officer to the superintendent in 1956, became a lieutenant colonel in 1960, and a colonel in 1964; and

WHEREAS, a superb educator and administrator, Colonel Young proudly served as Fishburne Military School's distinguished superintendent until 1973, when he returned to his first love, teaching English grammar and literature to his beloved cadets; and

WHEREAS, an exceptional mentor, Colonel Young was instrumental in shaping "honest, patriotic and conscientious young men" into future leaders in their communities and the nation; and

WHEREAS, throughout his remarkable career, Colonel Young was greatly respected by his students and his colleagues at Fishburne Military School and received numerous awards for dedicated service to the school and the community, including appointments to the military staffs of three Virginia governors; and

WHEREAS, in 1993 the Colonel Young Brigade was founded to honor Fishburne Military School's glorious heritage and Colonel Young's longtime commitment to the school and its traditions; and

WHEREAS, Colonel Young's legacy will live on through the Colonel Young Brigade, which has been instrumental in raising millions of dollars to aid current and future cadets and has made significant contributions to the Capital Campaign and numerous other important school initiatives; and

WHEREAS, always concerned with the welfare of his neighbors and his community, Colonel Young was a faithful member of First Presbyterian Church and active in its many missions; and

WHEREAS, Colonel Young will be fondly remembered as a demanding but inspirational and gifted teacher who brought to life the literary characters in Beowulf and Macbeth and instilled in his students a love of learning through his memorable lectures and chalk doodles of heroes and villains; and

WHEREAS, Colonel Young will be missed by his devoted wife Frances Hendee Young, beloved son Edward "Bick" Young, III,  and other cherished family members; his numerous cadets and colleagues; and his fellow citizens of the City of Waynesboro; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of an exemplary educator and outstanding Virginian, Colonel Edward Bickford Young, Jr.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Colonel Edward Bickford Young, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
