Celebrating the life of William Robert Perlik.

WHEREAS, William Robert Perlik, respected citizen, attorney, and former member of the Fairfax County School Board, died on June 2, 2006; and

WHEREAS, William Perlik was born and grew up in Pennsylvania; he served his country in the United States Army from 1943 to 1946 in France and Germany during World War II; and

WHEREAS, after the war, William Perlik graduated from Oberlin College in Ohio and received a law degree from Yale Law School in 1951; and

WHEREAS, William Robert Perlik was a founding partner of the Wilmer, Cutler & Pickering law firm, where he practiced commercial and contract law and later specialized in mediation and arbitration; and

WHEREAS, an articulate and passionate advocate for minority youth, William Perlik was a pioneer in his efforts to advance public school integration in Virginia in the 1950s and 1960s; and

WHEREAS, dedicated to quality education for all of the young people of Fairfax County, William Perlik served on the Fairfax County School Board from 1964 to 1971, including a term as chairman, and was president of the Virginia School Boards Association in 1972; and

WHEREAS, William Perlik was honored as the Fairfax Citizen of the Year in 1961 by the former Washington Evening Star for his many achievements as a community leader and benefactor; and

WHEREAS, in 1955 William Perlik and his wife, Annabel, became founding and faithful members of what is now the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Fairfax, and were active participants in the church's numerous missions; and

WHEREAS, William and Annabel Perlik also founded the Music from Oberlin at Oakton music series in 2002, which invites talented students from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music to perform free concerts at the church several times a year; and

WHEREAS, always concerned with the well-being of others, William Perlik will be fondly remembered for his avid love of gardening, reading, and music and will be missed by his devoted wife, children, grandson, and brother; his numerous other loving family members and friends; and the citizens of Fairfax County; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of a dedicated public servant and outstanding Virginian, William Robert Perlik; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of William Robert Perlik as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
