HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 5083
Celebrating the life of Michael E. Garbarino.

WHEREAS, Michael E. Garbarino, of the Fairfax County Police Department, is remembered for his valiant performance as a law-enforcement officer and for his devotion to his faith, family, and fellow officers; and

WHEREAS, an admired veteran of the Fairfax County Police Department, Officer Garbarino served most of his exemplary 23-year career as a patrol officer in the McLean District Police Station, but transferred to Chantilly's Sully District Station when it opened in 2003; and

WHEREAS, on May 8, 2006, Officer Garbarino was seriously injured in the line of duty during a tragic incident involving a gunman outside the Sully District Police Station; and

WHEREAS, after heroically fighting for his life at the Inova Fairfax Hospital for many days, Officer Garbarino died on May 17, 2006, surrounded by family and friends; and

WHEREAS, committed to protecting and serving Virginia's citizens and enforcing the laws of the Commonwealth, Officer Garbarino was a courageous and seasoned police officer with vast experience and was highly respected by the members of the law-enforcement and legal communities; and

WHEREAS, an exceptional mentor and role model for young people, Officer Garbarino generously gave of his time and talents as a resource officer at Pimmit Hills Alternative High School in Falls Church; and

WHEREAS, Officer Garbarino will be fondly remembered for his amiable and compassionate nature and will be missed by his loving wife and wonderful children and his numerous friends and admirers; and

WHEREAS, the loss of Officer Michael E. Garbarino is tragic, not only for his family but also for his fellow law-enforcement officers and the citizens of the Commonwealth, and is a reminder of the great sacrifices made by our police officers and all first responders throughout the Commonwealth and the nation; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the passing of a dedicated public servant and an outstanding Virginian, Michael E. Garbarino; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Michael E. Garbarino as an expression of the respect in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly.
