2006 SPECIAL SESSION I
WHEREAS, Kelley Duncan Swanson, an energetic and accomplished 2005 T.C. Williams High School graduate, died much too soon at the age of 18 on June 20, 2005, as a result of a sudden illness; and
WHEREAS, Kelley Swanson was born in Alexandria and attended Cora Kelly School for Math, Science and Technology and George Washington Middle School; and
WHEREAS, an extremely bright young woman and a serious student, Kelley Swanson excelled in Advanced Placement English, government, calculus, and Latin V and was an enthusiastic member of Latin Certamen team, Key Club, high school yearbook staff, and National Honor Society; and
WHEREAS, a dedicated athlete, Kelley Swanson's love of soccer began at the age of five, when she was one of the first and founding members of the spirited Purple Ds, an Alexandria recreational youth soccer team; and
WHEREAS, as a middle-schooler, Kelley Swanson went on to play for the talented Alexandria Torpedoes travel team; and
WHEREAS, her passion for soccer grew and Kelley Swanson matured into a skilled and experienced player, who was a valuable asset to the T.C. Williams High School varsity women's soccer team as its co-captain along with twin sister, Katey; and
WHEREAS, throughout her very short life, Kelley Swanson was an enthusiastic mentor to younger athletes and was especially committed to the Therapeutic Recreation Section's Youth Opportunity Sports program, which provides buddy support to young athletes with disabilities; and
WHEREAS, on her application to Virginia Tech, where she planned to attend in the fall of 2005, Kelley Swanson noted that she was "determined that a disability would not keep any Alexandria child from experiencing the adrenaline rush and team spirit of sports"; and
WHEREAS, today, the Kelley Cares Foundation, begun by friends and family, honors Kelley Swanson's determined wish to help her fellow citizens in need, both young and old, in the Alexandria community; and
WHEREAS, Kelley Swanson will be fondly remembered for her tenacity on the soccer field and for her kind and generous spirit and will be missed by her loving parents, sisters and brothers, and other family members; her numerous friends and fellow athletes; and the citizens of the City of Alexandria; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the untimely loss of a remarkable young Virginian, Kelley Duncan Swanson; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Kelley Duncan Swanson as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
