Celebrating the life of Luise Lehner Varljen.

WHEREAS, Luise Lehner Varljen of Manassas, a respected citizen and admired community volunteer, died on March 25, 2006; and

WHEREAS, Luise Lehner was born in Nuremberg, Germany, grew up in Berlin, and during World War II, was confined in an internment camp in Prague, where she survived to the end of the war; and

WHEREAS, after the war, Luise Lehner fell in love and married her devoted husband, Frank Varljen, who was a United States Army lieutenant, and the couple spent four tours of duty in Germany; and

WHEREAS, Luise Varljen lived in many places in the United States during her husband’s distinguished military career and in 1980 the Varljen family settled in Manassas; and

WHEREAS, committed to improving the quality of life for her fellow residents of Manassas, Luise Varljen gave generously of her time and immense talents to several civic organizations, including the Fort Belvoir Red Cross, the Prince William Symphony Orchestra, and numerous others; and

WHEREAS, Luise Varljen was a faithful and longtime member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and was an enthusiastic supporter of its vital missions in the community; and

WHEREAS, an extraordinary woman and a great inspiration to all who knew her, Luise Varljen will be fondly remembered for her zest for life and her compassion and will be missed by her husband of 51 years, Frank; her two sons, Mark and Peter, and their wives; her three cherished grandchildren; her numerous friends and admirers; and the congregation of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of a fine Virginian, Luise Lehner Varljen; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Luise Lehner Varljen as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
