Commending Melvin Bray.

WHEREAS, Melvin Bray, mayor of the Town of Dumfries, is recognized for his outstanding public service to the citizens of the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, before becoming mayor in 2002, Melvin "Mel" Bray served as a member of the Dumfries Town Council from 1994 to 2002 and as vice mayor from 2000 to 2002; and

WHEREAS, Mel Bray, originally from Pennsylvania, moved to Dumfries in 1979 after serving his country in the United States Marine Corps, retiring after 30 years as a sergeant major; and

WHEREAS, while still serving active duty, Mel Bray earned a bachelor's degree in health and physical education from what is now Winston-Salem State University; and

WHEREAS, after retiring from the military, Mel Bray decided on a career in law enforcement and joined the Prince William County Sheriff's Office; and

WHEREAS, in charge of Court Security and Internal Affairs Investigations, Mel Bray served the Sheriff's Office with great distinction until his retirement in 2000; and

WHEREAS, committed to improving the quality of life of his neighbors, Mel Bray has been an enthusiastic member and participant in the many civic projects of the local Moose Lodge, the American Legion, and the Knights of Columbus; and

WHEREAS, committed to his fellow veterans and peers, Mel Bray has been active in numerous professional organizations, serving as a former president of the Montford Point Marine Association; a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Marine Corps League; and a member of the Marine Drill Instructor Association, AMVETS, and the Disabled American Veterans; and

WHEREAS, Mel Bray is married to his lovely wife of 48 years, Joyce Harris Bray, and the couple has four devoted children and four beloved grandchildren; and

WHEREAS, a respected and inspirational mayor, town leader, and citizen, Mel Bray has always supported public policies and programs that would best serve the people of Dumfries; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Mayor Melvin Bray for his superb leadership and exemplary public service career; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Mayor Melvin Bray as an expression of the General Assembly’s gratitude for his continued dedication to the citizens of the Town of Dumfries and the Commonwealth.
