Commending Ruckersville Elementary School.

WHEREAS, Ruckersville Elementary School, a Greene County Public School, is recognized for aiding its adopted school, Harper McCaughan Elementary in Long Beach, Mississippi, which was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina on August 29, 2005; and

WHEREAS, students of Ruckersville Elementary School were committed to doing everything they possibly could during the 2005-2006 school year to help ensure that at least the education of their fellow students would continue in an area of Mississippi that suffered severe damage and loss of life; and

WHEREAS, Ruckersville Elementary School's fundraising effort, Long Beach Outreach, had as its goal to replace teachers’ treasured instructional materials, which were lost in the storm and could not be replaced by FEMA; and

WHEREAS, each grade level did its part to contribute, and students consulted with their state elected officials and showed great concern for the plight of Gulf Coast residents; and

WHEREAS, three 4th grade students, Kathryn DeFrank, Hailey Smoot, and Courtney Sigloh, organized a bake sale on a Saturday, sought donations from parents and teachers, and raised $300; and

WHEREAS, Ruckersville Elementary School sponsored Hat Day, when students contributing a dollar to benefit Harper McCaughan students were allowed to wear their favorite hat for the day, and the event raised well over $200; and

WHEREAS, backed by the generosity and support of family and friends, students held read-a-thons as a part of their fundraising efforts; kindergarteners raised $2,200 during their competition and third-graders raised $1,124 in a single day of reading; and

WHEREAS, Ruckersville Elementary School held a raffle to benefit Harper McCaughan Elementary with the aid of two very generous corporate sponsors—Colgan Air, which donated a pair of round-trip airline tickets to New York City, and Crutchfield, which donated a flat panel television set; Crutchfield also donated audio-visual equipment directly to the Mississippi students; and

WHEREAS, a grand pancake dinner benefit was held at the Stanardsville Volunteer Fire Department, where 168 people enjoyed great food and well over $900 was raised for the very worthy cause; and

WHEREAS, along with generous donations from community benefactors, terrific support from fire department members, food from both Harris Teeter and Sam’s Club, valuable coordination from Joyce Sims, and live music by the Warmed Over Boys, the fundraising event for Harper McCaughan Elementary School was a major success; and

WHEREAS, the students, parents, faculty, and staff of Ruckersville Elementary School, through its Long Beach Outreach project, attained an amazing goal of over $8,300, which provided $200 for instruction materials for every teacher at Harper McCaughan Elementary School; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate Ruckersville Elementary School on its outstanding achievement and its shining example for schools across the Commonwealth; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Principal Mike Coiner and the Ruckersville Elementary School family as an expression of the General Assembly’s gratitude for their commitment to Harper McCaughan Elementary School in Mississippi.
