2006 SPECIAL SESSION I
WHEREAS, Dorothy Wasserman Schick, respected citizen of Falls Church and a longtime political activist, died on September 20, 2005; and
WHEREAS, a native of Arlington, Dorothy “Dottie” Schick graduated from Washington-Lee High School, received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Oklahoma, and studied at the Corcoran College of Art and Design; and
WHEREAS, Dottie Schick’s parents, the Wassermans, owned and operated the oldest Chrysler-Plymouth dealership in Northern Virginia, Al’s Motors, which was continued by Dottie’s husband until his retirement in 2001; and
WHEREAS, for 38 years, Dottie Schick was the gracious hostess of the festive and much anticipated annual Mason District Democratic Crab Feast, which she held in her back yard; the event was attended by hundreds of federal, state, and local elected officials, including former presidents, governors, political candidates and party hopefuls, and their enthusiastic supporters; and
WHEREAS, Dottie Schick was a member of the Democratic National Committee, served as the chairwoman of the Fairfax Democratic Committee from 1979 until 1983, and was well-known for her able leadership and gift of diplomacy; and
WHEREAS, a compassionate community benefactor, Dottie Schick spent a great deal of her time helping her neighbors, her family members, and her fellow citizens through her altruistic work with the Beth El Hebrew Congregation in Alexandria; and
WHEREAS, Dottie Schick was an ardent doll collector and had a passion for quilts and antiques, and she and her husband spent their retirement remodeling a century-old waterfront home in Colonial Beach; and
WHEREAS, Dottie Schick will be fondly remembered for her generosity and amiable nature and will be missed by her loving husband and family, her numerous friends and admirers, and the citizens of Northern Virginia; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of an outstanding Virginian, Dorothy Wasserman Schick; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Dorothy Wasserman Schick as an expression of the General Assembly’s great respect for her memory.
