Celebrating the life of Charles K. Estes.

WHEREAS, Charles K. Estes of Sperryville, an honored citizen and community leader, died on April 1, 2006; and

WHEREAS, Charles K. "Pete" Estes was born on April 12, 1934, the only child of the late Charles Henry and Dorothy Gore Estes; and

WHEREAS, Pete Estes was a graduate of Randolph Macon Military Academy in Front Royal and attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg; and

WHEREAS, Pete Estes served his country in the United States Army and the Army Reserves from 1956 to 1962; and

WHEREAS, a man of great integrity, Pete Estes was appointed sheriff of Rappahannock County, serving with distinction from 1962 until 1972; and

WHEREAS, Pete Estes served Rappahannock County in many leadership positions, including as a member of the Board of Zoning Appeals, the County Planning Commission, the Water and Sewer Authority, and the Historical  Society; and

WHEREAS, since 1981 Pete Estes served as a distinguished member of the Rappahannock County Board of Supervisors, presiding as chairman of the board from 1998 until his death; and

WHEREAS, a hard-working and diligent public servant, Pete Estes was committed to improving the quality of life of his neighbors and preserving the beauty and heritage of Rappahannock County; and

WHEREAS, Pete Estes was a tremendous supporter of Sperryville, a little village he held dear and the only home he and his family ever knew; and

WHEREAS, Pete Estes was a member of the Sperryville United Methodist Church, a founding member of the Sperryville Volunteer Fire Department, and served on the Sperryville Business Council and the Gateway Committee; and

WHEREAS, a respected community benefactor, Pete Estes was named the Rappahannock News' Citizen of the Year in 2001; and

WHEREAS, Pete Estes will be fondly remembered for his kind and generous nature and will be missed by his devoted wife Betty Anne, three loving children and their families, and three cherished grandchildren; his numerous friends and admirers; and the congregation of Sperryville United Methodist Church; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of an outstanding community leader and fine Virginia gentleman, Charles K. Estes; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Charles K. Estes as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
