2006 SPECIAL SESSION I
WHEREAS, the Bruins of Forest Park High School (25-5) won the 2006 Virginia High School League Group AAA state girls' basketball championship at the Siegel Center in Richmond on March 11, 2006; and
WHEREAS, captains, seniors, and Division I recruits Monica Wright, headed to the University of Virginia, and Ashleigh Braxton, headed to the University of Pittsburgh, joined the Forest Park High School girls' basketball team as freshmen; and
WHEREAS, since that time the duo, with their talented teammates, has led the Bruins to an amazing 101-16 record; and
WHEREAS, in an exciting championship game, Forest Park trailed by four points with less than five minutes remaining when Monica Wright and freshman guard Dani Jackson combined for the Bruins' next 14 points, which included both drives and foul shots, with the lead changing seven times in the final 2 minutes and 38 seconds; and
WHEREAS, the fourth-ranked Bruins were down by only one point when Ashleigh Braxton was fouled by an Edison High School guard with 4.6 seconds left to play; and
WHEREAS, Ashleigh Braxton stepped up to the foul line and hit two critical free throws, clinching the championship game 57-56 against the No. 1 Eagles; and
WHEREAS, Dani Jackson scored 10 of her 14 points in the second half, Monica Wright scored 24 points with 13 rebounds, and Ashleigh Braxton scored 10 points; and
WHEREAS, the 2003-2004 state champions, the Forest Park Bruins have had 21 consecutive wins and were state runners-up last season; and
WHEREAS, Forest Park's triumph is a tribute to the leadership of Head Coach Christina Kelly and her staff, the talent and hard work of the players, and the enthusiastic support of the students, faculty, and supporters of Forest Park High School; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate the Forest Park High School girls' basketball team on a stellar 2005-2006 basketball season; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Head Coach Christina Kelly on behalf of the Forest Park High School girls' basketball team as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for its championship performance.
