SUMMARY AS PASSED:
Labeling of foods as kosher or halal; penalty. Prohibits the willful selling of food or food product labeled or displayed for sale representing the food or food product as kosher or halal without indicating the authority for such designation or providing a toll-free number or website to access the information. Violation of this section is a Class 3 misdemeanor. The bill also repeals the section regulating the sale of kosher meat and meat preparations in accordance with orthodox Hebrew religious requirements.

SUMMARY AS INTRODUCED:
Regulation of the sale of halal food; penalty. Provides that the sale and labeling of any food such as, but not limited to, meat and meat preparations that is falsely represented as halal and as having been prepared in accordance with halal certification requirements under Islamic dietary laws will be punishable as a Class 1 misdemeanor, which may result in confinement in jail for 12 months and a $2,500 fine, either or both.
