SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 36 Offered March 10, 2006 Commending Heritage High School boys' track team. ---------- Patrons-- Newman and Hawkins ----------

WHEREAS, the Heritage High School boys' track team won the 2006 Virginia High School League Group AA indoor track state championship; and

WHEREAS, as the Regional III team champions, the Heritage High School Pioneers scored 53.50 points to win the state championship title, defeating Appomattox High School, which placed second with 53 points; and

WHEREAS, Heritage High junior Wayne Ferguson led the Pioneers with two state titles in the jump events, winning with a long jump of 23'0.50", which set a state meet record, and a triple jump of 45'3"; and

WHEREAS, Cameron Grant won the 500-meter run, Stephen Thomas placed fifth in the pole vault, Michael Mitchell placed eighth in the pole vault, and Jo-el Trent placed fourth in the shot put; and

WHEREAS, the relay team of Ricky Calloway, Corry Calloway, Atlante Callands, and Wayne Ferguson placed fifth in the 800-meter relay; and

WHEREAS, giving their all and providing an exciting finish in the last event of the meet, the 1600-meter relay team of Fred Harden, Ricky Calloway, Corry Calloway, and Cameron Grant placed second to score eight points and defeat Appomattox by one-half of a point; and

WHEREAS, the success of the Pioneers is a tribute to the dedication and teamwork of the athletes, the leadership of Coach Michael Bennett and his assistant coaches, and the support of the parents, students, and faculty of Heritage High School; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the Senate of Virginia hereby commend the Heritage High School boys' track team on its Group AA indoor track state championship and its memorable 2006 season; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Head Coach Michael Bennett on behalf of all of the members of the 2006 Heritage High School boys' track team as an expression of the members' congratulations on their outstanding performance.
