Celebrating the life of Vernon Meredith Geddy, Jr.

WHEREAS, Vernon "Bud" Meredith Geddy, Jr., former mayor of Williamsburg and a founder of the Williamsburg Community Health Foundation, died on June 27, 2005; and

WHEREAS, Bud Geddy was born on April 12, 1926, attended Matthew Whaley School, graduated cum laude in political science from Princeton University in 1949, and earned a degree in law from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1952; and

WHEREAS, Bud Geddy served his country in the United States Air Force, deployed to the Marianas and the Philippines from 1944 to 1946; and

WHEREAS, Bud Geddy returned to Williamsburg to a lifelong practice of law; he was highly regarded by the citizens and legal community of James City County and the Commonwealth for his honesty, integrity, and immense legal acumen; and

WHEREAS, Bud Geddy was selected to the Williamsburg City Council in 1968, and served as mayor from 1970 to 1980; and

WHEREAS, Bud Geddy was an innovative and resourceful leader, who was dedicated to improving the quality of life for all residents, but also mindful of the City of Williamsburg's illustrious past; and

WHEREAS, committed to preserving the city's historic integrity, Bud Geddy was a trustee of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation and a member of the Colonial Williamsburg Hotel Properties Board; and

WHEREAS, Bud Geddy co-chaired the first fundraiser to collect money to build the Williamsburg Community Hospital and helped found the Williamsburg Community Health Foundation, a group that grants money to underfunded city health services; and

WHEREAS, in 2002, the Williamsburg Community Health Foundation created its annual Healthcare Hero Award for Community Leadership in honor of Bud Geddy; and

WHEREAS, Bud Geddy was president of the Virginia Bar Association from 1972 to 1973; a board member of numerous organizations, including the Virginia Historical Society, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, the Jamestown-Yorktown Educational Trust, WHRO Public TV, the National Center for State Courts, the Salvation Army, Williamsburg Community Hospital, the Greater Williamsburg Community Trust, and United Virginia Bankshares; and chairman of the Williamsburg Public Welfare Board and the Williamsburg Regional Library Association; and

 WHEREAS, Bud Geddy was a member of Bruton Parish Episcopal Church, where he taught Sunday school and was trustee and president of the Bruton Parish Church Endowment Fund, Inc.; and

WHEREAS, Bud Geddy will be remembered as an excellent leader and gifted mentor, who generously shared his time and vast experience; his good counsel was cherished by friends, peers, and especially aspiring public servants; and

WHEREAS, Bud Geddy will be sorely missed by his family, his numerous friends and admirers, and the residents of the City of Williamsburg; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby mourn the passing of a fine Virginia gentleman, Vernon Meredith Geddy, Jr.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Vernon Meredith Geddy, Jr. as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
