Celebrating the life of Emma Ross Hoffler.

WHEREAS, Emma Ross Hoffler, a compassionate community supporter, who was a resident of Richmond and formerly of Norfolk, died October 30, 2005; and

WHEREAS, Emma Ross Hoffler was born in Lynchburg on September 19, 1934, graduated from Dunbar High School, earned two undergraduate degrees in nursing and psychology from Howard University, and received a master's degree in guidance and counseling from Hampton Institute; and

WHEREAS, during her early career, Emma Ross Hoffler was a primary care nurse at Freedmen’s Hospital (now Howard University Hospital) and head nurse, assistant supervisor, and psychiatric nurse at Saint Elizabeth Hospital; and

WHEREAS, committed to improve the quality of life for the residents of Hampton Roads, Emma Ross Hoffler served at the Southeastern Tidewater Opportunity Project (Head Start); and

WHEREAS, in 1974, Emma Ross Hoffler married Dr. William M. Hoffler, Jr., and the loving couple had a beautiful daughter, who was Emma’s lifetime pride and joy; and

WHEREAS, she also began a 15-year career as administrator for Sufnor Internal Medicine in Norfolk; and

WHEREAS, Emma Ross Hoffler gave generously of her time and immense talents to numerous professional and civic organizations, including the Norfolk Community Hospital; the Norfolk Medical Society; the Old Dominion Medical Society; the Coalition of 100 Black Women; the Urban League Guild; and the Citizens’ Advisory Council on Furnishing and Interpreting the Executive Mansion in Richmond, a gubernatorial appointment; and

WHEREAS, in 1987, Emma Ross Hoffler was honored with the William A. Hunton YMCA’s Citizen of the Year award and the Old Dominion Medical Society President’s Award for Distinguished Leadership; and

WHEREAS, Emma Ross Hoffler was a dedicated supporter of young people and volunteered for many years at the Hampton Institute Laboratory School, which honored her with its Mother of the Year Award; she also was involved in numerous children’s cultural programs, including the Children’s Comedy Factory and the Norfolk State University Players; and

WHEREAS, Emma Ross Hoffler served as Area Development Director of the United Negro College Fund for the State of Virginia, where she generated millions of dollars for student scholarships during her 12-year tenure; and

WHEREAS, Emma Ross Hoffler will be fondly remembered for her ardent devotion to her community and sorely missed by her family, her numerous friends and admirers, and the congregation of Bank Street Memorial Baptist Church; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of an outstanding Virginian, Emma Ross Hoffler; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Emma Ross Hoffler as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
