2006 SESSION
064120768WHEREAS, on May 21, 2005, at the Chesapeake Conference Center, the Hampton Roads Committee of 200+ Men, Inc., recognized 340 promising young black men who had earned a grade point average of 3.0 or higher; and
WHEREAS, at its eighth annual awards event, the Hampton Roads Committee of 200+ Men, Inc., honored promising black male scholars for their outstanding academic achievement and celebrated their dedication so as to inspire other young people, especially young African-American men, to further their education; and
WHEREAS, according to data reviewed by The Virginian-Pilot newspaper, less than 10 percent of the area’s black men will graduate with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher, and it is the Committee’s mission to challenge students to improve this statistic; and
WHEREAS, nearly 2,000 young people have been honored by the Hampton Roads Committee of 200+ Men, Inc., with the 200+ Scholars award; the 2005 awards program was chaired by Marvin Lake, public editor for The Virginian-Pilot; and George C. Crawley, 200+ Men, Inc., CEO and president, addressed the enthusiastic gathering of impressive young men; and
WHEREAS, the Hampton Roads Committee of 200+ Men, Inc., is committed to improving the quality of life, education, and future of the young people of the Hampton Roads area; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring,
That the General Assembly commend the Hampton Roads Committee of 200+ Men,
Inc., for its outstanding commitment to its
200+ Scholars awards program and congratulate the outstanding achievements of
its recipients; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Hampton Roads Committee of 200+ Men, Inc., as an expression of the General Assembly’s gratitude for its dedication to the young people of the Hampton Roads area.
