2006 SESSION
069454808WHEREAS, 2006 marks the 75th anniversary of the Charity League of Martinsville & Henry County, Inc., founded in 1931 by 18 women dedicated to helping underprivileged and indigent children; and
WHEREAS, during the 1940s, League members helped in the war effort; in the 1950s, they helped staff a polio clinic that administered the vaccine to hundreds of citizens; and in the 1960s, the League established an emergency fund to help families with children in need; and
WHEREAS, in addition to maintaining many ongoing programs, League members in the 1970s were instrumental in the establishment of the Big Brothers organization in Martinsville, helped establish the Easter Seal Speech and Hearing Clinic, created an eye-screening clinic, and began giving scholarships to high school seniors; and
WHEREAS, in the 1980s, the Charity League of Martinsville & Henry County focused on children's programs, including Kids on the Block and the Young Artist Gallery, and in the 1990s started a literacy program, established camp sponsorships, and continued the scholarship program; and
WHEREAS, League activities in the new century have included the Missoula Theatre for Children, a $50,000 donation to the Salvation Army for the construction of a day care facility, a partnership with the Boys and Girls Club of Martinsville-Henry County, and the establishment of the Not Me Not Now teen pregnancy awareness program; and
WHEREAS, the Charity League of Martinsville & Henry County, having designated 2006 as The Year of the Child, is promoting free immunizations and free dental care for children, is working with Citizens Against Family Violence to promote the annual "Take Back the Night" rally, and is cooperating with area high schools to decrease alcohol-related motor vehicle accidents; and
WHEREAS, throughout its 75-year history, the Charity League of Martinsville & Henry County has relied on more than 400 women who have volunteered their time, treasure, and talent for the betterment of their communities; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Charity League of Martinsville & Henry County, Inc., on the occasion of its 75th anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Charity League of Martinsville & Henry County, Inc., as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration and gratitude for its efforts on behalf of the citizens of Martinsville and Henry County.
