2006 SESSION
WHEREAS, Reeves Edward Johnson, Sr., former police chief of the City of Virginia Beach and public servant in many capacities for that City, died on February 12, 2006, at the age of 91; and
WHEREAS, Reeves Johnson, who was born in Princess Anne County and spent his entire life in the Virginia Beach area, graduated from Oceana High School and then attended the Institute of Applied Science, where he mastered law-enforcement procedures such as fingerprinting, forensic ballistics, and investigative techniques; and
WHEREAS, he is believed to be the first law-enforcement officer of the Virginia Beach area to be invited by J. Edgar Hoover to attend the FBI Academy; and
WHEREAS, upon graduation from the Academy, Reeves Johnson was appointed police chief of the City of Virginia Beach, where he served in that capacity for 16 years; and
WHEREAS, after the merger of the City of Virginia Beach and Princess Anne County, Reeves Johnson continued in public service with the new City of Virginia Beach and brought his expertise and management skills to benefit the City in various capacities; and
WHEREAS, Reeves Johnson retired as director of general services at the conclusion of his 42-year career of service to his City and this Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, Reeves Johnson's interests and contributions ranged far beyond his service to the City, included numerous positions of trust and honor in law-enforcement organizations, and reflected his devotion to his family, church, and community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Reeves Edward Johnson, Sr., a distinguished law-enforcement officer and public servant; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Reeves Edward Johnson, Sr., as evidence of the respect of the General Assembly for this noted citizen of Virginia Beach and the Commonwealth.
