SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 275
Commending Anita L. Smith, Chief Deputy Clerk of the Virginia Beach General District Court.

WHEREAS, Anita L. Smith, who has served the citizens of Virginia Beach in the office of the Virginia Beach General District Court since 1972, retired on November 1, 2005; and

WHEREAS, a native of Virginia Beach, Anita L. Smith began her career with the Virginia Beach General District Court on August 1, 1972, as a clerk typist, and was promoted to Deputy Clerk, then to Clerk of the Criminal Division, and finally to Chief Deputy Clerk; and

WHEREAS, Anita L. Smith was the first Virginia Beach General District Court clerk to serve for more than 30 years; and

WHEREAS, Anita L. Smith was admitted to and attended Court Administration courses at numerous institutions, including the National Judicial College, the National Center for State Courts, the State Justice Institute, the Institute for Court Management, and the Department of State Police; and

WHEREAS, Anita L. Smith assisted in the implementation of a pilot project to cut court expenses and to expedite administrative procedures by imaging criminal records; and

WHEREAS, for 33 years, Anita L. Smith has rendered distinguished, honorable, and dedicated service to the Virginia Beach General District Court, the citizens of Virginia Beach, and the Commonwealth of Virginia; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Anita L. Smith on the completion of an exemplary career of public service and wish her every happiness and success in her future endeavors; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Anita L. Smith as an expression of the admiration of the General Assembly.
