2006 SESSION
WHEREAS, Kristi Lauren Glakas of Centreville, a graduate of Centreville High School and a senior at George Mason University, was named Miss Virginia 2005; and
WHEREAS, Kristi Lauren Glakas’ platform issue for her reign as Miss Virginia is "Enabling America’s Youth to Achieve Excellence"; and
WHEREAS, representing Virginia in the 2006 Miss America Competition held on January 21, 2006, in Las Vegas, Nevada, Kristi Lauren Glakas was the 3rd runner-up, as well as the Preliminary Swimsuit Award winner; and
WHEREAS, on her website as Miss Virginia, Kristi Lauren Glakas serves as a role model for teens by addressing their concerns regarding substance abuse, peer pressure, and other problems they may face as young people in today's complex world; and
WHEREAS, a well-rounded youth growing up, who enjoyed a multitude of interests, Kristi Lauren Glakas hiked the Appalachian Trail, counseled at a leadership-based outdoor skills camp, and worked as a stable hand in elementary school; she was a teen spokesperson for Locks of Love and donated 18 inches of her hair, which was cut off by Richard Simmons on his special show for charity; and
WHEREAS, Kristi Lauren Glakas is working towards a bachelor of arts degree in English and pre-medicine at George Mason University; and
WHEREAS, driven by a desire to help children and an interest in the treatment of childhood diseases, Kristi Lauren Glakas hopes to earn a doctorate of medicine and to become a pediatrician; and
WHEREAS, an exemplary student and role model, Kristi Lauren Glakas is a member of the George Mason University Dean’s List and a Hoya Crystal Essay Scholarship winner; and
WHEREAS, Kristi Lauren Glakas was an honorary guest at the National Hellenic Awards and a keynote speaker for the Rotary International Annual Awards, the American Cancer Society's Annual Golf Tournament, and for several juvenile justice events; and
WHEREAS, an articulate spokesperson and advocate, Kristi Lauren Glakas raised over $40,000 for Breast Cancer Awareness, was named Speaker of the Year by Tidewater Community College, and served on a forum on health care policy at Franklin Health Care Center; and
WHEREAS, Kristi Lauren Glakas has been interviewed "as a mentor for leadership" by Virginia Tech students, serves on the board of directors of Girls, Inc., and is a prominent spokesperson for “Right Decisions, Right Now,” a substance-abuse prevention program; and
WHEREAS, a young woman of exceptional intelligence, talent, and dedication, Kristi Lauren Glakas is a most fitting representative of the Commonwealth as Miss Virginia 2005; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Kristi Lauren Glakas on being named Miss Virginia 2005; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Kristi Lauren Glakas as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and best wishes for continued success in all of her future endeavors.
