Celebrating the life of Joseph Keene.

WHEREAS, Joseph Keene, respected community leader, public servant, and employee of the Jewell Smokeless Coal Corporation for many years, died on February 7, 2006; and

WHEREAS, Joseph "Joe" Keene was born in Buchanan County on August 12, 1953, the son of the late Edward Keene and Nancy Thornsbury Keene; and

WHEREAS, Joe Keene attended The Pennsylvania State University and Southwest Virginia Community College, where he received a national electronics certification; and

WHEREAS, dedicated to improving the quality of life for all of the citizens of the community, Joe Keene generously gave his time and talent over the years to numerous civic and professional organizations by serving as chairman and member of the Buchanan County Board of Supervisors, North Grundy District; as vice chairman and member of the Buchanan County Electoral Board; and as a member of the boards of the Virginia Coalfields Economic Development Authority, the Buchanan County Disability Service, People Incorporated, and the University of Appalachia; and

WHEREAS, Joe Keene was a founder and chairman of the Buchanan County Public School Educational Foundation, which awarded scholarships to seniors in all of the high schools in Buchanan County; and

WHEREAS, Joe Keene was a great supporter of the Buchanan County Technology and Career Program and served as the chairman of its General Advisory Committee; and

WHEREAS, committed to the well-being of his neighbors, Joe Keene was a member of the Slate Creek Fire Department, as well as Masonic Lodge #17 AF & AM; and

WHEREAS, an avid outdoorsman and golfer, Joe Keene was a member of the Willowbrook Country Club and the Dismal River Hunting Club; and

WHEREAS, Joe Keene was an active and devoted member of the Maple Grove Church of Christ, where he served as deacon; and

WHEREAS, Joe Keene will be fondly remembered for his hard work and soft-spoken manner and sorely missed by his loving wife of 33 years, his children, his numerous other family members and friends, and the citizens of Grundy and Buchanan County; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of an outstanding public servant and fine Virginian, Joseph Keene; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Joseph Keene as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
