2006 SESSION
WHEREAS, Ronald Edward Cox, a respected community leader and former mayor of Brookneal, died on January 25, 2006; and
WHEREAS, Ronald “Ronny” Cox was born in Altavista on June 25, 1941, the son of the late Jacob Astor and Gladys Dalton Cox, and graduated from Lynchburg College; and
WHEREAS, elected in 1988, Ronald Cox served as the mayor of the Town of Brookneal with devotion and distinction for 14 years; and
WHEREAS, before becoming mayor, Ronald Cox was a gifted educator with the Campbell County Public Schools, first as a history and government teacher at William Campbell High School, and then as the principal of the Campbell County Vocational School; and
WHEREAS, committed to improving the quality of life of his neighbors and the prosperity of his community, Ronald Cox diligently supported public policies that benefited all of the residents of the Town of Brookneal; and
WHEREAS, a mentor and a great believer in young people, Ronald Cox was also the head football coach at William Campbell High School for 17 years; and
WHEREAS, always willing to help his fellow citizens in need, Ronald Cox was an active and devoted member of Brookneal United Methodist Church; and
WHEREAS, Ronald Cox will be fondly remembered for his love of golf, which he played with an unorthodox bag of clubs that looked akin to an assortment of “garden tools,” and also for his sensitive and probing poetry that touched the heart and the mind; and
WHEREAS, Ronald Cox was a compassionate and generous man and a loving father and will be sorely missed by his beloved wife, daughter, son, and other family members; his numerous friends and admirers; and the citizens of the Town of Brookneal; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of an outstanding Virginian, Ronald Edward Cox; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Ronald Edward Cox as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
