SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 261
Commending the Haymarket Woman's Club.

WHEREAS, in 2006, the Haymarket Woman's Club will observe the 75th anniversary of its founding and is recognized for its commitment to improving the community; and

WHEREAS, founded in 1931 by 12 women from Haymarket, Catharpin, Gainesville, and nearby communities, these women came together in friendship, study, and work for the welfare of the community; and

WHEREAS, today, the Haymarket Woman's Club’s mission remains the same, and the club welcomes new neighbors to the community; and

WHEREAS, since World War II, Haymarket Woman’s Club members have prepared lunch for voters on Election Day, and today the Club serves hundreds of voters lunch; and

WHEREAS, the Club holds a bazaar, participates in Haymarket Day and other community events, and donates all proceeds to the community; and

WHEREAS, the Club awards two scholarships each year--one to a graduating high school senior who plans to attend college and one to a student who plans to study nursing; and

WHEREAS, the Club gives books and donations to schools and libraries and good citizen awards to students of local elementary schools; and many area organizations benefit from the volunteer time and money given by the Club; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Haymarket Woman's Club for its 75 years of service and congratulate the Club on the anniversary of its founding; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the members of Haymarket Woman's Club as an expression of the gratitude of the General Assembly for their exemplary model of community service.
