Celebrating the lives of Richard Alan Dunn and Daniel Richard Dunn.

WHEREAS, Richard Alan Dunn, an associate pastor and longtime resident of Harrisonburg, and his son, Daniel Richard Dunn, died on May 14, 2005; and

WHEREAS, tragically, Richard Dunn and Daniel Dunn died from injuries sustained in a single-engine airplane accident; and

WHEREAS, Richard Dunn was born on October 5, 1960, in Washington, D.C., attended school in Springfield, and earned a bachelor's degree in business from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University; and

WHEREAS, Daniel Dunn was born on February 2, 1989, and was a sophomore at Harrisonburg High School; and

WHEREAS, Richard Dunn's calling and gifts as a minister were diverse and rich; he served as an associate pastor for the Harrisonburg First Church of the Nazarene, as a pastor of prison ministry for the River of Life Ministries, and as an illusionist for area organizations and local festivities, performing creative, biblically oriented shows for children; and

WHEREAS, Richard Dunn also flew for Aerial Sign Company of Hollywood, Florida, and worked for James Madison University Dining Services; and

WHEREAS, Richard Dunn was a passionate pilot, and his love of flying energized his faith; he flew Christian-themed banners above beaches, festivals, and other public gatherings; and

WHEREAS, Richard Dunn was a volunteer for the Family Forum, an active member of the Harrisonburg Rotary Club and the National Brotherhood of Magicians, and once opened the United States Congress with a prayer; and

WHEREAS, Daniel Dunn was a respectful and reserved young man with an infectious smile, who shared his father's steadfast faith as well as his great love of airplanes; the teenager wished to learn to fly and obtain a private pilot's license like his father; and

WHEREAS, Daniel Dunn played soccer and farm-league baseball and was an enthusiastic team player, who possessed a mature sense of fair play and sportsmanship; and

WHEREAS, displaying a great concern for the needs of others, Daniel Dunn participated in a Harrisonburg First Church of the Nazarene youth ministry project, Student Impact; he was responsible for looking after the Sunday school children, preparing their lessons, and organizing their classroom; and

WHEREAS, in 2003, the Harrisonburg Rotary Club honored Daniel Dunn with its Code of Ethics Scholarship; and

WHEREAS, Richard Dunn and Daniel Dunn were dedicated servants of the church and enthusiastic contributors to the well-being of their neighbors in the Shenandoah Valley; and

WHEREAS, Richard Dunn and Daniel Dunn will be sorely missed by their family, the congregation of the Harrisonburg First Church of the Nazarene, and their many friends and admirers; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with profound sadness the untimely passing of father and son, Richard Alan Dunn and Daniel Richard Dunn; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Richard Alan Dunn and Daniel Richard Dunn as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for their memory.
