WHEREAS, in 1956, a group of Fairfax County citizens, long concerned about the need for hospital facilities in Fairfax County, met at the home of Grace Lucas to begin planning a community hospital; as a result, the Fairfax Hospital Association was incorporated to build and operate a not-for-profit hospital in the county; and

WHEREAS, in February 1961, the Fairfax Hospital opened a 282-bed facility, which included an emergency suite and other diagnostic and treatment services; and

WHEREAS, Fairfax Hospital is dedicated to providing the highest quality medical care to all members of the community, and no patient has ever been turned away; and

WHEREAS, over the next 10 years, the Fairfax Hospital added patient beds, expanded the emergency suite, and built a medical library and outpatient department; and

WHEREAS, Fairfax Hospital’s bed count more than doubled to 614 by 1973, and the facility featured many specialized services, including an orthopedics unit, a stroke unit, a pediatric intensive care unit, a neonatology program, a pulmonary function lab, and an infectious diseases program; and

WHEREAS, in 1997, Fairfax Hospital was renamed Inova Fairfax Hospital to reflect its status as the flagship hospital of the not-for-profit Inova Health System; and

WHEREAS, Inova Fairfax Hospital is consistently ranked in the top 100 hospitals in the nation and has been named to U.S. News & World Report’s list of America’s Best Hospitals numerous times; and

WHEREAS, Inova Fairfax Hospital is now equipped with 833 beds and has Northern Virginia’s only Level I trauma center for treating the most critically injured patients and the nation’s fifth busiest obstetrics program; and it is among a select few hospitals nationwide to perform heart, lung, kidney, pancreas, liver, and bone marrow transplants; and

WHEREAS, Inova Fairfax Hospital was one of the first four hospitals in the country awarded Magnet Hospital recognition by the American Nurses Credentialing Center for its outstanding patient care and nursing leadership; and

WHEREAS, in 2004, the 156-bed Inova Heart and Vascular Institute opened on the Inova Fairfax Hospital campus, a state-of-the-art facility and the region’s first hospital dedicated solely to the treatment and prevention of heart disease; and

WHEREAS, over the years, Inova Fairfax Hospital has kept pace with the community’s growing health care needs, adding new technology, equipment, and services, but one thing has not changed--its community service mission, first envisioned over 40 years ago by fellow Northern Virginians: “to improve the health of the diverse community we serve through excellence in patient care, education and research”; and

WHEREAS, Inova Fairfax Hospital includes the Fairfax Hospital for Children, a 186-bed facility, located on the campus of Inova Fairfax Hospital, which is 10 years old and has origins dating back to 1988, when Inova Fairfax Hospital began performing pediatric heart surgeries; and

WHEREAS, the Women’s and Children’s Center opened its doors in 1992; and by 1996, the center had evolved into the Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children and the Inova Fairfax Hospital Women’s Center; and

WHEREAS, Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children offers specialized pediatric care in almost every medical specialty from allergies to cardiac surgery and has grown to include a 16-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, a 75-bed subspecialty level Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, which is Northern Virginia’s only pediatric tertiary care center, and a Child Life Department; and

WHEREAS, Inova Fairfax Hospital's mission helps ensure that everyone in the community receives the highest quality health care and services possible; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Inova Fairfax Hospital on the occasion of its 45th anniversary; and, be it
