SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 22
Celebrating the life of George Calvin Duggins.

WHEREAS, George Calvin Duggins of Chesapeake, a friend and dedicated advocate for veterans, died on August 1, 2005; and

WHEREAS, born in Norfolk, George Duggins graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in 1961 and attended Norfolk State College, now Norfolk State University; and

WHEREAS, George Duggins served his country by enlisting in the United States Army in 1965, serving two tours of duty in Vietnam; and

WHEREAS, after his military service, George Duggins earned an associate degree in computer science at Tidewater Community College and worked for First Hospital Corporation until 2003; and

WHEREAS, George Duggins was a devoted and active member of the Vietnam Veterans of America and served in key leadership and advocacy positions over the years, including national president from 1997 to 2001; and

WHEREAS, George Duggins gave his time and immense talent to the needs of veterans on a local government level, serving as chairman of the Mayor’s Committee of Veterans Affairs for the City of Chesapeake; and

WHEREAS, President Clinton appointed George Duggins to the Veterans Corporation in 2000, and he was appointed by Governor Mark Warner to serve on the Board of Veterans Services for the Commonwealth in 2004; and

 WHEREAS, a knowledgeable and articulate spokesperson, George Duggins will be remembered for his enthusiasm and compassionate support of American veterans on the local, state, and national levels; and

WHEREAS, George Duggins was a faithful and devoted member of Metropolitan AMEZ Church, where he was chairman of the board of trustees, member of the steward board, and president of the choir; and

WHEREAS, George Duggins will be fondly remembered and sorely missed by his family, his numerous friends, the congregation of Metropolitan AMEZ Church, and the countless veterans he proudly served; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of a dedicated public servant and outstanding Virginian, George Calvin Duggins; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of George Calvin Duggins as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
