065768792WHEREAS, Judge Frederick Harmon Combs II, an admired and respected judge of the 29th Circuit Court of Virginia, died on August 7, 2005; and
WHEREAS, a native of Hampton, Frederick Combs was born on March 22, 1946, graduated from Grundy High School, earned an undergraduate degree from the University of Richmond, and received a law degree from the T.C. Williams School of Law; and
WHEREAS, Frederick Combs practiced law with the firm of Gillespie, Chambers & Combs in Tazewell; and
WHEREAS, in 1985, Frederick Combs was appointed to the 29th Circuit Court of Virginia, which at the time included Tazewell, Buchanan, Dickenson, and Bland Counties; he held the position for over 20 years, retiring from the bench on June 30, 2005; and
WHEREAS, Frederick "Fred" Combs served on many statewide judicial committees, including the Judicial Inquiry and Review Commission, and was appointed a substitute judge after his retirement; and
WHEREAS, Fred Combs was an exemplary Rotarian in the Rotary Club of Tazewell, where he served as president as well as in many other positions, and was a Paul Harris and Skelton Fellow; he was active on the boards of the Historic Crab Orchard Museum and the Tazewell Community Hospital, and was a Master Gardener; and
WHEREAS, Fred Combs will be sorely missed by his family--his wife of 38 years and his five children and five grandchildren; numerous friends and colleagues; and the congregation of the Tazewell Presbyterian Church; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of the Honorable Frederick Harmon Combs II, a committed public servant and outstanding Virginian; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of the Honorable Frederick Harmon Combs II as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory.
