063848724WHEREAS, L. Gene Harding, respected citizen and former treasurer of the City of Charlottesville, died on March 3, 2005; and
WHEREAS, Gene Harding was born in Schuyler on October 17, 1926, served his country in the United States Navy during World War II, and married Kathlene Butler in 1948; and
WHEREAS, a hardworking and exemplary public servant, Gene Harding was appointed deputy city sergeant in 1946 and city sergeant, now called city sheriff, in 1948; and
WHEREAS, in 1956, Gene Harding was appointed city treasurer, a post he held with distinction for 37 years; and
WHEREAS, Gene Harding was honored with every award bestowed by the Treasurers' Association of Virginia, including the L. Gene Harding Lifetime Achievement Award; and
WHEREAS, a compassionate community supporter, Gene Harding served as president of several professional and civic organizations, including the Lions Club, the Charlottesville Retirees Association, the Virginia Treasurers' Association, as well as master of the Widow’s Sons’ Lodge #60; and
WHEREAS, a lifelong Democrat, Gene Harding worked as the campaign treasurer for numerous Democratic candidates over the years; and
WHEREAS, Gene Harding will be fondly remembered for his fervent belief in always helping others and will be sorely missed by his loving wife, son, daughter-in-law, and three wonderful granddaughters; his many other family members and friends; and the congregation of First United Methodist Church; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a devoted public servant and outstanding Virginian, L. Gene Harding; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of L. Gene Harding as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
